Judo

Win It Standing

Saturdays at 9:00 AM — included with your membership.

Judo is the Olympic art of throws, trips, breakfalls and pins. It shares its roots with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the two fit together naturally: Judo teaches you to control a fight on your feet and take it to the ground, and Jiu-Jitsu teaches you what to do once you’re there.

How It Works

Part of your training, not another bill

Judo isn’t a separate program at Western Plains. It’s open to every student with an active membership, the same way Open Mat is.

Included

Any Kids or Adult membership

If you have an active Kids BJJ or Adults BJJ membership, you’re welcome in Judo. No sign-up, no extra fee — just come to class.

Saturdays · 9:00 AM

Make a morning of it

Judo runs right before Saturday Striking and Open Mat, so you can throw, strike and roll in one visit.

What You’ll Train

The standing game

Breakfalls

How to fall safely and get back up — the first thing every judoka learns, and a skill that pays off well beyond the mat.

Grips & Off-Balancing

Controlling your partner’s posture and balance so a throw happens with timing instead of strength.

Throws & Trips

Hip, hand and foot techniques that take a resisting partner from standing to the mat with control.

Pins & Transitions

Holding the position after the throw — where Judo hands off to your Jiu-Jitsu.

I have always been a big martial arts fan. I’ve trained in Taekwondo, Shito-Ryu Karate (black belt), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Judo. In 2017, my son and I began training in Judo. It is an amazing feeling to effortlessly pick someone up and toss them or trip them with ease. Currently, I have a brown belt in Judo and continue to train in this Olympic-style art. I’ve also completed the Renjuku Academy, an advanced leadership judo course taught by Steve Scott that prepares students to coach Kodokan Freestyle Judo.

Around 2020, my family and I moved to Gillette, WY. We fell in love with the area. My son and I quickly joined Western Plains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and enjoyed the family atmosphere and top-tier training the school offers. Currently, I hold a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At Western Plains, I teach both Judo and BJJ to students young and old. We meet you where you are and help you improve your abilities. Both arts are amazing and complement each other very well. By studying both, you can improve your ability to effectively control an attacker standing up or on the ground.

I work for the school district and have three kids of my own. I enjoy teaching and helping people reach their goals. If you’re thinking about starting your martial arts journey, look no further — Western Plains has knowledgeable instructors who can help you meet your martial arts goals. I look forward to working with you!
